HORSE STORIES
My favorite horse are selected for a reason! Continue reading for their stories.
Joker . . . The real life Joker, was a 30+ year old TW gelding who was given to me as a rescue. He was the epitome of gentle giant, at well-over 17hh, and the sweetest horse I've ever met.
In the winter of 2016, I went out to feed the horses their supper. It was dark and snowy when I discovered that Joker had died, probably just hours earlier. I don't know the life he lived before I owned him, but I do know his last 7 months of life were good. RIP to one of my favorite horses, who died too soon.
Zorro . . . In 2009, my sister and I went to our first horse auction. While we were walking through the holding pens, we came across this real life, "black beauty". He was listed as a Thoroughbred/Morgan gelding, age 8, green-broke, and called Coal. He was tall and skinny, but seemed nice enough.
He was one of the last horses auctioned off, and although the bid started at $500, he was eventually dropped down to $75. We bid and won! Our parents freaked, thinking we had enough horses at that time, but as any horse-person knows, this is not a factual statement.
Eleven years later, we consider Zorro one of our best horses. It turned out he was actually 4 years old with no training. So we've put all the miles on him (including several years of dressage riding/training), and he is just an absolute pleasure to ride. He is also quite tall, at just shy of 17hh.
Zephyr. . . In the spring of 2015, we rescued a pregnant Thoroughbred mare named Sunny. We quickly discovered that Sunny had not had an easy life and hated men. She tolerated females, so I was her primary handler. On October 23, 2015, she gave birth to an appaloosa colt, who we named Zephyr. He was the first foal to be born on our property, so he will always hold a special place in our hearts.
He's now a 3-year old and starting his training. He's quirky, a mastermind at escaping pastures, and a social-butterfly. I look forward to all the years I will have with him.
Tawny Me . . . AKA "Tina", is a 1992 Appendix Quarter Horse mare. At nearly 30 years old as of 2021, she's still going strong and twice a week participates in lessons, teaching an 8 year old, horse crazy girl how to ride! We've owned Tina since she was 11 and have schooled up to 3rd level dressage and jumped nearly 3'. She's an incredible horse.
Loki . . . We rescued him, along with his mom, when he was only about a month old. We were instantly in love with his good-natured attitude and fluffy mane (he's pictured above in my avatar). Now at 6 years old in 2021, he's well on his way to being a well-trained youngster. On his 4th ride, back in 2019, we took him out trail riding and he there he learned to walk/trot/canter with rider, was introduced to steep hills, rocky terrain, rattle snakes, and deer. He took it all like a trooper and I'm proud to say he's one of the best trail horses I've ever ridden - despite his young age.
About me
I am an adult, and recently came back to this game after taking a hiatus to finish school. I own four horses, and used to do jumping and dressage competitively, but now I just do it for pleasure. Two of my horses are young colts that I'm currently starting under saddle. I work as a MLT (Medical Lab Technician). I love to write, and hope to have a few books published in the near future!
